The risk of lung cancer is less in people who quit smoking than in people who continue to smoke the same number of cigarettes every day, and the risk decreases as the number of years since quitting increases.

People who stop smoking when they are young get the greatest health benefits from quitting. Those who quit in their 30s may avoid most of the risk due to tobacco use. However, even smokers who quit after age 50 largely reduce their risk of dying early. The argument that it is too late to quit smoking because the damage is already done is not true. It is never too late to quit smoking!

Health Effects of Smoking
About half of all Americans who continue to smoke will die because of the habit. Each year about 440,000 people in the United States die from illnesses related to cigarette smoking. Cigarettes kill more Americans than alcohol, car accidents, suicide, AIDS, homicide, and illegal drugs combined.

Cancer

Cigarette smoking accounts for at least 30% of all cancer deaths. It is a major cause of cancers of the lung, larynx (voice box), oral cavity, pharynx (throat), esophagus (swallowing tube connected to the stomach), and bladder, and it contributes to the development of cancers of the pancreas, cervix, kidney, stomach, and also some leukemias.

Smoking is responsible for about 87% of lung cancer deaths. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in both men and women, and is one of the most difficult cancers to treat. Lung cancer is a disease that can in many cases be prevented. Groups that promote non-smoking as part of their religion, such as Mormons and Seventh-day Adventists, have much lower rates of lung cancer and other smoking-related cancers.

Other Health Problems

Only about half of the deaths related to smoking are from cancer. Smoking is also a major cause of heart disease, aneurysms, bronchitis, emphysema, and stroke, and it makes pneumonia and asthma worse.

Using tobacco can also damage a woman's reproductive health. Tobacco use is linked with reduced fertility and a higher risk of miscarriage, early delivery (premature birth), stillbirth, infant death, and is a cause of low birth-weight in infants. It has also been linked to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

Smoking has also been linked to other health problems, including gum disease, cataracts, bone thinning, hip fractures, and peptic ulcers. It is also linked to macular degeneration, an eye disease that can cause blindness.

Furthermore, the smoke from cigarettes (called secondhand smoke or environmental tobacco smoke) has a harmful health effect on those exposed to it. (See the American Cancer Society documents, Secondhand Smoke and Women and Smoking.)

Effects on Quantity and Quality of Life

Based on data collected from 1995 to 1999, the CDC estimated that adult male smokers lost an average of 13.2 years of life and female smokers lost 14.5 years of life because of smoking.

But not all of the health problems related to smoking result in deaths. Smoking generally affects a smoker's health, harming nearly every organ of the body, and causing many diseases. According to the CDC in 2000, about 8.6 million people had at least one chronic disease because they smoked or had smoked. Many of these people were suffering from more than one smoking-related condition. The diseases that occurred most often were chronic bronchitis, emphysema, heart attacks, strokes, and cancer. These diseases can steal away a person's quality of life long before death. Smoking-related illness can limit a person's activities by making it harder to breathe, get around, work, or play.

Find some support.

Sign in as a guest to browse and read posts from other quitters, or register(free) to post messages of your own. Add some support to your quit smoking program.

Eat a well-balanced diet.
Treats are fine, but be careful not to go overboard with the wrong kinds of food right now. Your body is working hard to expel toxins during the withdrawal process, and that takes energy. Choose foods that will provide you with the high quality fuel you need. Avoid the empty calories of junk food.

Take a multi-vitamin.
Smoking depletes our bodies of nutrients. Give yourself a boost with the help of a multi-vitamin. This, combined with good diet will help you minimize the fatigue that can often occur during nicotine withdrawal.

Stock the fridge with healthy snacks.
Have small bags of bite size fresh veggies within easy reach. Celery and carrots sticks with low fat ranch dressing for dipping makes a good snack. Fresh fruit, such as pineapple chunks, berries, melon or other fruits in season will satisfy your sweet tooth if they're clean and ready to eat when you're looking for a snack. Good freezer treats include low fat fudgesicles and frozen grapes.

Get out for a walk.
A short walk every day – as little as 15 minutes even, can work wonders for you as you withdraw from nicotine. Walking reduces edginess and improves circulation. It also releases endorphins, the "feel good" hormone. So, when the urge to smoke strikes, head out for a walk around the block. You’ll come back refreshed and relaxed.

Get more sleep.
Early cessation is tiring. Your body is stressed and so is your mind. Allow more time to sleep if you need it. Don’t worry, the weariness won't last. Your energy will return soon.

Drink water!
Water helps you flush residual toxins from smoking out of your body more quickly. It also works well as a craving buster. Drink water before you snack and you'll eat less. Water is an important part of your diet! Keep yourself well-hydrated, and you'll feel better in general. That will in turn help you manage withdrawal symptoms more easily.

Keep some supplies in your car.
If you spend a lot of time driving, have some items handy to help you pass the time more comfortably. Drink some of that water we just talked about while you're driving. Keep a bottle or two in the car at all times. Also store a bag of hard candies and lollipops in your glovebox and have some straws or cinnamon sticks availabe to chew on.

Do some deep breathing.
Cravings usually hit fast and with force. They're strongest at the start, and fade in intensity within 3 - 5 minutes. Don't panic when you get a craving to smoke. Take a few moments to concentrate on your breathing. Close your eyes if possible and breathe in and out slowly. Let the craving wash over you like a wave while you focus on your breathing. The urge will pass and you’ll be left feeling stronger.

Turn your bathroom into a day spa.
Light some candles, and take a long hot bubble bath. Treat yourself to a manicure and pedicure and follow with a facial. Pamper yourself!

Have a cup of tea.
Allow yourself a few minutes to relax with a cup of tea and honey. Choose herbal teas rather than those with caffiene. It's an quick and easy way to rejuvenate yourself.

Reward yourself.
Come up with a list of small gifts that you can give yourself every day. Take a hot bath. Buy a new candle. Read a fun magazine. Enlist someone else in the family to cook dinner. Small daily rewards will boost your spirits and fortify your resolve to keep the quit.

Be patient and kind to yourself during the early days of smoking cessation. The rewards will outweigh the discomforts you're going through. Nicotine withdrawal is a temporary phase. Better days are ahead!

How to Quit Smoking...
Immediately after quitting:

1. Develop a clean, fresh, nonsmoking environment around yourself - at work and at home. Buy yourself flowers - you may be surprised how much you can enjoy their scent now.
2. The first few days after you quit, spend as much free time as possible in places where smoking isn't allowed, such as libraries, museums, theaters, department stores, and churches.
3. Drink large quantities of water and fruit juice (but avoid sodas that contain caffeine).
4. Try to avoid alcohol, coffee, and other beverages that you associate with cigarette smoking.
5. Strike up a conversation instead of a match for a cigarette.
6. If you miss the sensation of having a cigarette in your hand, play with something else - a pencil, a paper clip, a marble.
7. If you miss having something in your mouth, try toothpicks or a straw.

Avoid temptation:

1. Instead of smoking after meals, get up from the table and brush your teeth or go for a walk.
2. If you always smoke while driving, listen to a particularly interesting radio program or your favorite music, or take public transportation for a while, if you can.
3. For the first 1-3 weeks, avoid situations you strongly associate with the pleasurable aspects of smoking, such as watching your favorite TV program, sitting in your favorite chair, or having a cocktail before dinner.
4. Until you are confident of your ability to stay off cigarettes, limit your socializing to healthful, outdoor activities or situations where smoking is not allowed.
5. If you must be in a situation where you'll be tempted to smoke (such as a cocktail or dinner party), try to associate with the nonsmokers there.
6. Try to analyze cigarette ads to understand how they attempt to "sell" you on individual brands.

When you get the crazies:

1. Keep oral substitutes handy - try carrots, pickles, sunflower seeds, apples, celery, raisins, or sugarless gum instead of a cigarette.
2. Take 10 deep breaths and hold the last one while lighting a match.Exhale slowly and blow out the match Pretend it's a cigarette and crush it out in an ashtray.
3. Take a shower or bath if possible.
4. Learn to relax quickly and deeply. Make yourself limp, visualize a soothing, pleasing situation, and get away from it all for a moment. Concentrate on that peaceful image and nothing else.
5. Light incense or a candle instead of a cigarette.
6. Never allow yourself to think that "one won't hurt" - it will.

Find new habits:
1. Change your habits to make smoking difficult, impossible or unnecessary. For example, it's hard to smoke while you're swimming, jogging, or playing tennis or handball. When your desire for a cigarette is intense, wash your hands or do the dishes, or try new recipes.
2. Do things that require you to use your hands. Try crossword puzzles, needlework, gardening, or household chores. Go bike riding or take the dog for a walk; give yourself a manicure; write letters.
3. Enjoy having a clean mouth taste and maintain it by brushing your teeth frequently and using a mouthwash.
4. Stretch a lot.
5. Get plenty of rest.
6. Pay attention to your appearance. Look and feel sharp.
7. Try to find time for the activities that are the most meaningful, satisfying, and important to you

Kesan Asap Rokok Kepada Si Perokok Dan Orang Di sekeliling
Si perokok bukan sahaja perlu bertanggungjawab pada diri sendiri tetapi turut bertanggung jawab pada orang disekeliling akibat daripada bahaya asap rokok. Asap rokok yang dihidu oleh perokok atau mereka yang berada di sekelilingnya, akan memasuki rongga mulut dan hidung melalui kerongkong ke paru-paru. Kandungan asap rokok akan menyebabkan kerosakan tisu di sepanjang perjalanan di ruang ini. Ia boleh menyebabkan pelbagai penyakit di mulut, kerongkong, paru-paru dan barah. Asap akan melalui saluran pernafasan ke dalam paru-paru dan merosakkan saluran bronkus, menyebabkan bronkitis, penyakit di bahagian paru paru. Ia juga akan merosakkan pundi udara dalam paru-paru (alveoli) dan menyebabkan penyakit emfisima.

Asap rokok yang dihidu juga akan melalui saluran penghadaman dan pencernaan, yang boleh menyebabkan pelbagai penyakit di bahagian esofagus, perut dan pankreas.

Racun dalam asap rokok yang larut air akan memasuki sistem saluran darah dan dibawa ke seluruh badan. Bahan nikotin, bukan saja memberi sifat ketagihan, malah menyebabkan saluran darah arteri menjadi sempit. Ia juga merosakkan dinding arteri dan akan memudaratkan organ berkaitan.

Kesan ini, dalam jangka panjang, akan menyebabkan simptom kebas pada kaki, jari, migrain, sakit kepala, pedih ulu hati, kekejangan otot kaki, serangan penyakit jantung dan sebagainya.

Racun rokok akhirnya disaring dalam buah pinggang dan dihapuskan dari badan melalui air kencing. Dalam proses ini pula, berlaku satu lagi keracunan hasil penguraian kimia asap rokok yang turut merosakkan buah pinggang. Racun dalam air kencing juga menyebabkan kerosakan pundi kencing.

Racun akibat merokok juga mempunyai kesan tindak balas terhadap ubat-ubatan. Secara umum diketahui merokok boleh menjejaskan fungsi beberapa kumpulan enzim di hati dan ada kalanya ia boleh memperhebatkan kesan sampingan sesuatu ubat itu.

Kandungan Berbahaya Dalam Rokok
Setiap batang rokok yang dinyalakan akan mengeluarkan lebih 4 000 bahan kimia beracun yang membahayakan dan boleh membawa maut. Dengan ini setiap sedutan itu menyerupai satu sedutan maut. Di antara kandungan asap rokok termasuklah bahan radioaktif (polonium-201) dan bahan-bahan yang digunakan di dalam cat (acetone), pencuci lantai (ammonia), ubat gegat (naphthalene), racun serangga (DDT), racun anai-anai (arsenic), gas beracun (hydrogen cyanide) yang digunakan di "kamar gas maut" bagi pesalah yang menjalani hukuman mati, dan banyak lagi. Bagaimanapun, racun paling penting adalah Tar, Nikotin dan Karbon Monoksida.

Tar mengandungi sekurang-kurangnya 43 bahan kimia yang diketahui menjadi penyebab kanser (karsinogen). Bahan seperti benzopyrene iaitu sejenis policyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) telah lama disahkan sebagai agen yang memulakan proses kejadian kanser.

Nikotin, seperti najis dadah heroin, amfetamin dan kokain, bertindak balas di dalam otak dan mempunyai kesan kepada sistem mesolimbik yang menjadi punca utama penagihan. Sindrom ketagihan terhadap nikotin yang ditunjukkan dengan gejala gian, tolerans dan tarikan, adalah mungkin lebih hebat berbanding najis dadah. Malah daripada kajian saintifiknya nikotin itu juga sejenis najis dadah, sepertimana yang telah diiktiraf oleh dunia perubatan. Seseorang yang kehabisan rokok kadangkala berkelakuan seperti mengalami gangguan akal dan dalam keadaan yang amat tertekan sekali. Oleh itu terlalu sukar untuk sesiapa yang telah terjerat dengan ketagihan merokok, meninggalkan tabiat itu untuk selamanya, kecuali dengan ikhtiar yang serius dan kehendak Allah jua.

Nikotin turut menjadi punca utama risiko serangan penyakit jantung dan strok. Hampir satu perempat mangsa pesakit jantung adalah hasil punca dari tabiat merokok. Di Malaysia, sakit jantung merupakan menyebab utama kematian sementara strok adalah pembunuh yang keempat.

Karbon Monoksida pula adalah gas beracun yang biasanya dikeluarkan oleh ekzos kenderaan. Gas ini menjejaskan bekalkan oksigen ke tisu-tisu hingga ianya menjadi terencat dan akhirnya boleh menyebabkan maut sekiranya paras karbon monoksida di dalam badan melebihi 60%.

Apabila racun rokok itu memasuki tubuh manusia ataupun haiwan, ianya akan membawa kerosakkan pada setiap organ disepanjang laluannya, iaitu bermula dari hidung, mulut, tekak, saluran pernafasan, paru-paru, saluran penghazaman, saluran darah, jantung, organ pembiakan, sehinggalah ke saluran kencing dan pundi kencing, iaitu apabila sebahagian dari racun-racun itu dikeluarkan dari badan.
